Beginning Sounds Worksheet

Beginning Sounds with Clothes — Letter O

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills Common Core

Listen for the first sound in overalls. On this sheet the child is handed the letter O and finds every one of the clothes whose name begins with its sound — overalls all open with O. Saying each word, catching its opening sound, then tying that sound to the letter O is the Kindergarten letter-sound link this practises, set among a shirt, a sock and a hat.

To find what begins with O, a child must say each picture and isolate its first sound, then judge whether it matches O. That is the heart of early phonics — knowing the sound a letter makes and catching it at the front of words like overalls. The varied a shirt, a sock and a hat keep a wide set of opening sounds in play, so the work never narrows to one rehearsed answer; the child really has to listen.

Once a child can pick the O sound out of a word like overalls, that same careful listening works everywhere. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the A-sound pictures in clothes, or the B-sound pictures in clothes. Every beginning-sounds worksheet and the full clothes set are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and each first sound a child names makes the next letter that little bit quicker to catch.
