Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Farm Animals — Letter L
Listen for the first sound in lamb. On this sheet the child is handed the letter L and finds every one of the farm animals whose name begins with its sound — lamb and llama all open with L. Saying each word, catching its opening sound, then tying that sound to the letter L is the Kindergarten letter-sound link this practises, set among a cow, a pig and a goat.
Linking the letter L to the sound it makes is the bedrock of Kindergarten reading, and this hunt practises it directly: the child hears the first sound of lamb and decides it belongs to L. This is letter-SOUND work, not letter-shape recognition — a child has to know what L sounds like, then catch that sound at the start of words like lamb and llama, long before they could read those words on their own.
Once a child can pick the L sound out of a word like lamb, that same careful listening works everywhere. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the B-sound pictures in farm animals, or the C-sound pictures in farm animals. Every beginning-sounds worksheet and the full farm animals set are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and each first sound a child names makes the next letter that little bit quicker to catch.
