Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Farm Animals — Letter C
Here the target letter is C, and the child circles the farm animals that begin with its sound. They say a picture — cow — stretch out its first sound, and decide whether it matches C. The scene mixes a cow, a pig and a goat, so the ear has to work: cow, cat 2 and calf begin with C while the rest do not. Hearing the opening sound, not spotting a letter shape, is the whole game.
Linking the letter C to the sound it makes is the bedrock of Kindergarten reading, and this hunt practises it directly: the child hears the first sound of cow and decides it belongs to C. This is letter-SOUND work, not letter-shape recognition — a child has to know what C sounds like, then catch that sound at the start of words like cow, cat 2 and calf, long before they could read those words on their own.
Listening for C across a scene of farm animals turns phonics into a game, and finishing one letter invites the next. Try the B-sound pictures in farm animals, or the D-sound pictures in farm animals.
