Beginning Sounds with Farm Animals — Letter D

KindergartenReading: Foundational SkillsCommon Core

Say it, hear the start, match the letter D. The child looks over the farm animals on this sheet and circles each one that begins with D's sound — duckling, dog and donkey. Because duckling opens with that sound, it gets marked; pictures that begin another way do not. Catching the first sound of a spoken word and tying it to a letter is the heart of Kindergarten phonics, practised here across a scene of a cow, a pig and a goat.

Producing the match — deciding that duckling begins with D — asks a child to do real phonics: hold the sound D makes in mind and test each picture's opening against it. Because the farm animals include names that begin other ways, the child cannot guess; they have to listen. That careful sound-by-sound checking against the letter D is precisely what Kindergarten reading is built on.

Once a child can pick the D sound out of a word like duckling, that same careful listening works everywhere. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the B-sound pictures in farm animals, or the C-sound pictures in farm animals. Every beginning-sounds worksheet and the full farm animals set are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and each first sound a child names makes the next letter that little bit quicker to catch.
