Word Tracing Worksheet

Copy the Capitals: Read the Card, Then Write It

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills Common Core

DICE. CRAYONS. BICYCLE. Three toys, three words, and every letter a capital on this Kindergarten word tracing page. Each word is printed in solid teal on the cream card beneath its own picture, and the writing area beside it is completely empty: two handwriting rules to a row and no dashed letters anywhere on the sheet. The child reads the word off the card, carries it across the gap, and writes it twice in block capitals. Words here can run to eight letters, so the hand has a real string to keep in order rather than a short one.

Two things are being asked at once here, and it is worth knowing which is which. The letter shapes are the easy half, since capitals are straight lines and plain curves, all one height, with none of the ascender and descender judgements lowercase demands. The hard half is the copying: holding seven letters in the right order while the eyes leave the model. A child who writes BICYLE has not failed at handwriting, they have run out of working memory, and the answer is to copy in chunks of two or three letters rather than to slow the pencil down. The second attempt in each row usually shows whether that chunking has been found.

Print the PDF free and let the child point at the card between chunks; travelling back to the model is allowed, and it is how the habit forms. Three rows keeps the demand honest for a first unsupported page. Trace the words in capital letters is the same block hand with a dashed lane to follow if this is too much today, and copy the word does the identical job in lowercase for classes learning that hand first.
