Copy the Grid Picture: First Steps on a 6x6 Grid

Two pictures, two empty grids, and not a letter or a number anywhere on the page. This Kindergarten grid copy worksheet gives each card a six-by-six grid with some squares filled solid teal so a simple shape appears, and an identical blank grid beside it. The child looks at the filled grid, counts across and down to find the same square on the empty one, and colors it, working through the picture square by square until the copy matches.

Six by six is thirty-six squares, small enough that a child can see the whole picture at once and still find a single square in it. Leaving the edges unlabelled is deliberate at this stage: the only way to place a square is to count from the corner in both directions, which is exactly the row-and-column habit the labelled versions later put names to. A copy that bends or slides one square sideways shows where the counting stopped.

Print the PDF free and offer one colored pencil rather than a set, so attention stays on position instead of on decorating. Work the top picture together and leave the second one to the child. When counting from the corner is reliable, the letters and numbers version puts A to F along the top and 1 to 6 down the side so squares can be named aloud, and the 8x8 version enlarges the grid.
