Copy the Picture Using Letters and Numbers: A to F, 1 to 6

Letters run along the top of every grid on this Kindergarten page and numbers run down the side. Two cards each hold a six-by-six pixel picture on the left and an empty six-by-six grid on the right, and both grids carry the same labels: A to F across, 1 to 6 down. The child finds a filled square, reads off its letter and its number, then colors the square with that same address on the blank grid.

Naming a square is what turns counting into reading a coordinate. Instead of tracking two counts in the head, the child can say C4 out loud, hold two symbols instead of two distances, and check the copy against the model without recounting from the corner every time. It is also the point at which a mistake becomes explainable: not the picture looks wrong, but I colored B3 when it should have been B4. Saying each address aloud before coloring is what makes that possible.

Print the PDF free and insist on the naming for the first few squares even when the child can see where to go. Two pictures per page is enough for a first sitting. The unlabelled 6x6 version is the place to start if counting from the corner is still uncertain, and the 8x8 version keeps the labels while widening the grid to A to H and 1 to 8.
