Copy the Picture on an 8x8 Grid: A to H, 1 to 8

Eight columns and eight rows make sixty-four squares, and this Kindergarten grid copy page asks the child to work through two of them. Each card shows a filled pixel picture on the left and an empty grid on the right, both labelled A to H along the top and 1 to 8 down the side. The pictures use more squares than the smaller grids do, so the copy takes longer and the child has to keep track of where the work stopped.

A bigger grid changes the task in a way that is easy to underestimate. On six by six a child can hold the whole picture in view; on eight by eight the eye has to travel, and with it comes the real skill of working row by row rather than jumping to whichever filled square is noticed next. The labels make that method possible - finish row 3 across, then start row 4 - and a child who works this way finishes with a clean copy and no gaps.

Print the PDF free and suggest the child crosses off each row of the model with a finger as it is finished. Expect this page to take twice as long as the six-by-six versions; it is not a warm-up.
