Cut and Paste: Sort the Animals into Their Boxes

This Kindergarten cut and paste worksheet ends with glue on fingers and a big smile. Along the bottom of the page runs a strip of animal pictures. The child cuts the strip apart, looks closely at each animal, decides which of the labeled boxes it belongs in, and glues it into place. There is real learning hiding inside the fun. Steering scissors along a line is one of the best fine-motor workouts a young hand can get, building the same control that pencil work needs. And the sorting is early classification thinking: to place each animal, the child has to notice its features, compare it with the category labels, and commit to a decision. That look-compare-decide loop is the root of the grouping children later do in math and science.
