Add Up the Basket: Every Card Asks for the Total

Every card on this 2nd grade money worksheet asks the same question. Five toys hang their price tags from the shelf at the top, a truck at 15¢, a pack of cards at 45¢, a balloon at 20¢, a chess piece at 25¢ and a dinosaur at 40¢, and the three story cards underneath each name two of them and want the total. Emma wants two things, Ben puts two in the basket, Anna buys two: the wording changes, the arithmetic does not. Each card gives a dot grid to work on and a dashed box with ¢ for the answer.

Repeating the question is the point of this version. When the type is fixed, the child stops spending attention on what is being asked and puts it into how to add two two-digit numbers, and the three cards become three attempts at the same method rather than three separate puzzles. All the prices are multiples of five, so the totals stay friendly and can be reached by counting on in fives, in tens, or by splitting the tens from the ones. Watching which of those three routes a child takes is more informative than the answer.

Print the PDF free and use it as the settling page after a mixed sheet has shown that totals are shaky. Ask for the two prices to be copied onto the dot grid before adding, so the working shows where a mistake happened. The buying three things version keeps the same question but puts three prices in every basket, which forces a strategy rather than a fact.
