Money Word Problems Worksheet

Shopping Math: Two Money Stories and a Four-Item Shelf

Grade 2 Measurement & Data Common Core

The shelf is short and so is the page. Four animals stand along the teal plank at the top of this 2nd grade money worksheet with a paper price tag hanging under each, a moose at 20¢, a hippo at 15¢, a raccoon at 10¢ and a tiger at 25¢. Only two story cards follow. In the first, Emma puts two of the animals in her basket and the question is the total; in the second, Leo has 40¢ and the child circles yes or no to whether that buys two named animals, then writes what they come to. The animals appear inside the stories as pictures, not words, so the shelf has to be read.

Two cards is a deliberate size. A money page with six problems becomes an endurance test, and the child who understands the first two learns nothing from the next four; the child who does not understand them is stuck six times over. Cutting the page to one addition and one comparison leaves room to talk. Putting the pictures rather than the names in the story text is the quiet demand here: before any arithmetic happens, the child has to look up two tags, which is the shop-reading skill the whole family is built on.

Print the PDF free and use it as a first meeting with the shelf, working the two cards together before setting a longer version alone. The dot grid inside each card is there for jottings, and the small ¢ printed beside the answer box is a reminder that the unit belongs in the answer. Add up the basket goes on to three straight totals, and the four questions page puts one of each type on a single sheet once all four are familiar. Counting coins is the page to visit first if coin values are still uncertain.
