Sound Strip: How Many Sounds in the Word?

Grade 1 Phonological Awareness PDF only Common Core

Six identical dashed boxes follow every picture on this 1st grade sound strip page, whatever the word. The sheet shown runs six zoo animals down the page in single rows — a panda, a koala, a bison, a zebra, a tiger and a seal — each with the same strip of six squares beside it. The child says the word slowly and writes one sound in each box starting at the left, then stops; the boxes not needed stay empty. Nothing marks a wide box and nothing tells the child how many sounds to expect. Words on this face run from three to six sounds.

The fixed strip is what makes this a 1st grade page. In the Kindergarten sound boxes the number of boxes is the answer to how many sounds; here the strip is the same for seal and for zebra, so the child has to decide the count alone and write a two-letter sound into a single box without a wide-box hint. That is the segmenting skill without its scaffold, the step just before spelling from dictation. A quick glance down the right-hand side shows a teacher at once who over-segments and who stops early.

Print it once the base sound boxes page is easy; the layout is plain enough to reuse weekly with a new zoo animals draw or another theme. It pairs with the syllables-and-sounds page, which puts the arcs and box counts back but for longer words. One portrait sheet, pencil only.
