Count the Sounds: One Dot for Every Sound You Hear

No letters and no separate boxes: this Kindergarten count-the-sounds page gives each of its six around-the-house pictures one long dashed box and one small square. The sheet shown has a mirror, a kitchen, a shovel, a spoon, a bowl and a rug. The child says the word slowly, draws one dot in the long box for every sound heard, then counts the dots and writes the numeral in the small box. Words on this face hold between two and five sounds, so the answer is a small number and the dots stay readable.

Because the long box gives no hint of how many sounds to expect, this is a harder listening task than the base sound boxes page even though nothing is written but dots and a numeral. It is also a purer one: a child who cannot yet form letters can still show that they hear four sounds in spoon and three in rug. Watch how the dots are spaced — a child who draws one dot per letter or per syllable is showing where their segmenting still needs work.

It prints on one sheet and needs a pencil or a crayon. Use it before the base sound boxes page as a listening-only warm-up, or afterward to check that the counting survives without the boxes.
