Sound Boxes Worksheet
Syllables and Sounds: Clap, Then Write One Sound in Each Box
Arcs are printed above the boxes on this 1st grade syllables-and-sounds page, one arc per syllable, with a gap between the syllable groups. Six around-the-house pictures run down the sheet in single rows — a window, a bottle of shampoo, a closet, a curtain, a mailbox and a toolbox — and each word's boxes are split under two arcs on this sheet, three boxes then two for window, three then three for mailbox. Wide boxes with a curve beneath mark two-letter sounds. The child claps the syllables, then says each syllable slowly and writes one sound in each box under its arc. The whole word is never printed.
Longer words defeat one-pass segmenting, and syllables are how readers get through them: clap the word into parts, then hear the sounds inside each part. The two-tier layout builds exactly that habit, with words of four to seven sounds across two or three syllables on this face. It stays a sound boxes page rather than a syllable-division page because the letters are the task — the arcs are given, the syllable count is given, and what the child produces is the spelling of each part.
Print it after the six-box sound strip page, when a child can segment a one-syllable word without help. Saying the word with a clap per syllable before writing is worth modeling on the first row. A window, a closet and a mailbox are all on this sheet, so the around-the-house theme also feeds classroom vocabulary; other themes print with the same arcs.
