Sound Boxes with Animals: One Sound in Each Box

Kindergarten Phonological Awareness PDF only Common Core

Six numbered cards, two across and three down, make up this Kindergarten sound boxes worksheet with animals. Each card shows one large color picture — on this sheet a cat, a donkey, a koala, a camel, a panda and a tiger — and under it a row of empty dashed boxes, one for every sound in the word: three for cat, four for tiger, five for the others. Where two letters spell one sound, the box is wider and has a small curve drawn beneath it, as in the ey of donkey and the er of tiger. No letters of the word are printed anywhere on the page; the child says the word slowly, listens, and writes one sound into each box in order.

This is the Elkonin box task: the boxes tell the child how many sounds to listen for, and the wide box tells them where a sound will need two letters. That scaffold is what separates it from a plain spelling test — the structure is given, the letters are not. Words run from three to five sounds at this level, and the theme word bank keeps the pictures nameable by a five-year-old. Watch for a child writing a letter per box by sight; the page only works if the word is said aloud first.

Print one per child, or one for a small group with a whiteboard beside it for the say-it-slowly step. The count-the-sounds page removes the boxes altogether, and the first-sound-given page writes the first letter in for the child.
