Sentence Scramble Worksheet
Unscramble the Sentence: No Capital, No End Mark
Every tile on this 1st grade sentence-building page is lowercase, and not one of them carries a period. Four rows run down the sheet, each with a small picture of one of the animals at the left, a camel, a woodpecker, a penguin and a giraffe, and a set of white word tiles beside it: feeds, emma, camel, the. Even the name is printed in lowercase, so nothing on the row says where the sentence begins. The child works out the one order that makes sense, writes it on the three-line rule underneath, and adds the capital and the end mark the tiles never gave.
Taking the clues away turns a sorting task into a reading task. With no capitalized tile to anchor the first word, the child has to hear the sentence to know that Emma feeds the camel works while the camel feeds Emma, grammatical as it is, is not what the picture shows. The lowercase name is the sharpest part of the design, because a child who writes emma on the line has ordered the words correctly and still missed the rule that names take a capital wherever they stand. One row asks a question, so the end mark is a decision too.
Print the PDF free and ask for the sentence to be read aloud before the pencil moves, then read back afterwards with the capital and the mark in place. Children who order the tiles confidently but keep losing the capital are better served by the fix the sentence page, where the order is already right. The with clues version is the step back if the ordering itself is shaky. Write about the picture is where sentences like these stop being puzzles and become the child's own.
