The Problem: KDP Pricing Math Is Buried
Before you can price a KDP paperback, you need to know three numbers: what Amazon charges to print it, what your royalty rate will be, and what your minimum list price is. Every one of those numbers lives in a different place.
Amazon's own printing cost calculator is inside the KDP dashboard — you have to log in, start a book project, and poke around before it shows you anything. Most third-party KDP calculators only handle the US marketplace, which is useless if you are pricing for Europe or the UK too. And almost none of them handle the June 2025 royalty change: paperbacks priced at $9.99 or above now earn 60%, and paperbacks below that earn 50%. That one number can change your per-sale profit by two dollars, and most publishers are pricing blind.
We also kept seeing sellers ask the same question in our own inbox: "Is my activity book priced right?" Our honest answer was always "run the math yourself," because no existing tool gave a fast comparative answer. For more context on why this matters, see our guide on pricing educational printables and the bigger KDP vs Etsy platform comparison.
What We Built
The calculator handles every piece of the pricing puzzle in one form:
**All 8 Amazon marketplaces.** USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, JPY, PLN and SEK. Switch regions with one click and the printing cost formula updates automatically, including the different fixed-plus-per-page rates Amazon uses in Europe.
**All ink types.** Black & white (the sweet spot for activity books), standard color (lighter paper, cheaper per page), and premium color (heavier paper, much richer color). The calculator shows you the per-page cost difference so you can see how ink choice affects your margin.
**The 50%/60% royalty tier built in.** Type a list price and the tool tells you instantly which tier you are in, how far you are from the 60% threshold, and what the royalty gap looks like in dollars. This is the single most valuable thing for KDP authors right now — pricing at $9.99 instead of $9.49 can nearly double your per-sale royalty on a low-page-count book.
**A "compare all marketplaces" view.** Enter one set of book specs and see the printing cost plus royalty in every currency side-by-side. Useful when you are setting different list prices per marketplace or deciding where your margin is best.
**Minimum list price, auto-calculated.** The tool always shows you the KDP minimum list price (printing cost ÷ royalty rate) so you never accidentally price below your cost floor. If you are designing a cover and need physical dimensions too, pair this with our KDP cover size calculator for a full pre-publish checklist.
How to Use It
The whole flow takes about 30 seconds.
1. Open the KDP royalty calculator.
2. Pick your ink type (B&W for most activity books, premium color for coloring books and visual workbooks).
3. Enter your page count and trim size.
4. Select your Amazon marketplace and enter your list price.
5. Read off the printing cost, royalty, and margin instantly — and scan the "compare all marketplaces" table to see how your book performs in every currency at the same list price.
That is it. No account, no email capture, no paywall. If you prefer to explore the output rather than commit to a price, try typing different list prices and watching the royalty jump when you cross the $9.99 threshold — that visual is the fastest way to internalize why the tier matters.
Why We Made This Free
We build printable generators for Etsy, KDP and Gumroad sellers — things like our word search maker and 32 other worksheet tools. KDP publishers and activity book sellers are exactly the audience we build for, and helping them price their books correctly costs us nothing and builds trust. We also plan to launch more calculators in this family (cover sizing, niche research, platform profit comparison), and we would rather give them all away free than bolt a paywall onto a 200-line calculator. If you find it useful, the best thank-you is trying one of our generators for your next book interior.
