Beginning Sounds Worksheet

Beginning Sounds with Farm Animals — Letter S

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills Common Core

Begin with sheep and listen to its first sound. This sheet asks the child to find every one of the farm animals that starts the same way as S — sheep — and mark them. The point is the sound at the front of each word and the letter S it belongs to, the Kindergarten letter-sound link, set in a scene mixing a cow, a pig and a goat so the child sifts many opening sounds to find S's.

The Kindergarten skill here is letter-sound correspondence: knowing the sound S makes and recognizing it at the start of a spoken word. Finding sheep trains it without any reading — the child works from the pictures and says each word aloud. Tying the sound at the front of sheep to the letter S, again and again, builds the habit that blending and decoding will later rely on.

Children who enjoy hunting the farm animals settle into saying each picture and listening for the S sound, and every match is a small win. When S feels easy, try the beginning sounds in the B-sound pictures in farm animals, or the C-sound pictures in farm animals. You can also browse every beginning-sounds worksheet or the whole farm animals collection for kindergarten — each sheet prints cleanly or plays online for free, and the more first sounds a child hunts, the quicker the link between a sound and its letter becomes automatic.
