Measurement Worksheet

Capacity and Mass: Read the Jugs and Scales

Grade 2 Measurement & Data Common Core

This Grade 2 measurement worksheet splits its page between capacity and mass, with a vehicles theme rolling through it. On one side, three measuring jugs hold liquid at different levels, and the child reads each scale to write the amount in milliliters. On the other, three balance scales weigh little vehicles, and the child reads off each mass in grams. Six readings in all, each one written down together with its unit.

Reading a scale is a skill of its own, separate from arithmetic: the child has to work out what each unlabeled tick mark is worth, follow the liquid level or the pointer to the right line, and report the number with its unit attached. Milliliters and grams also give children their first working feel for metric measurement — how much a jug really holds, how heavy a small object really is — turning abstract units into physical intuition they will use in science class and in the kitchen.
