About this activity
A shape appears — a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, ellipse, diamond, hexagon, or pentagon — and the child taps the cutting lines to split it into 2 equal parts (halves) or 4 equal parts (fourths). It's a free, interactive Grade 1 geometry activity that plays in the browser on any device, with no sign-up.
The big idea is that equal shares must be fair — the pieces have to be the same size. Cutting a variety of shapes, not just circles, shows that halves and fourths are about equal area, not one familiar picture: a square cut into a grid of four and a circle cut into four both make fourths. Because the child does the cutting, they make the parts equal themselves rather than recognizing a finished picture.
It is aligned to Common Core 1.G.A.3 — partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares and describing them as halves and fourths. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
What's inside this activity
- Designed for Grade 1 learners (ages about 6–7)
- Common Core strand: Geometry
- Aligned to Common Core standard 1.G.A.3
How to play
Look at the shape and the number of equal parts to make.
Tap the cutting lines to split it into halves or fourths.
Make sure the pieces are equal — there is no timer and no score.
What your child practices
- Cutting circles, squares, and other shapes into equal parts
- Making 2 equal shares (halves) and 4 equal shares (fourths)
- Keeping the pieces the same size so the shares are fair
- Seeing halves and fourths across many different shapes
Learning goals
Partition shapes into two and four equal shares — the focus of Common Core 1.G.A.3
Describe the equal parts as halves and fourths
Build the fair-share foundation that later fraction work depends on
