Sock & Shadow — Say It So a Listener Understands (Kindergarten)

Kindergarten·SL.K.6

A free interactive Kindergarten speaking game for clear expression: be Sock's voice and tell Shadow — who is behind the curtain and can't see — exactly which lost object to fetch. Say just enough: too vague and Shadow holds two cups; too many words and Shadow forgets half. Choosing the right words so a listener understands is the heart of Common Core SL.K.6. (Speaking aloud is practiced with a grown-up.)

About this activity

The child is Sock's voice, telling Shadow — a puppet behind the curtain who can't see the tray — exactly which object to fetch, adding a color, size, or position word when there are two cups or two hats to tell apart. It's a free, interactive Kindergarten speaking game that runs in the browser with no sign-up, meant to be played aloud with a grown-up.

The trap runs both ways, and that is the lesson: say too little and Shadow holds up the wrong object or two at once; pile on too many words and Shadow forgets half the message. The child chooses meaning-chips — color, size, position, the object name — to build the smallest clear description, then taps Tell Shadow and watches whether the puppet fetches correctly. One round even asks the child to name a feeling and its reason. Because this is speaking practice, the spoken part is meant to be done aloud with a grown-up.

It is aligned to Common Core SL.K.6 — speaking audibly and expressing thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
