Sprout's Patchwork Meadow — Measure Area by Covering with Unit Squares (Grade 3)

Grade 3·3.MD.C.6

A free interactive Grade 3 math activity: help Sprout the gardener carpet irregular flower beds completely with moss-patch unit squares — no gaps, no overlaps — and the area is the count of squares it takes to cover the space. The beds are L-shapes and staircases, so there is no length to multiply by a width: children measure area the real way, by covering the space with unit squares and counting them. Cover from empty, fix a covering with a gap and an overlap, predict an area, finish a partial bed, and build a bed of an exact size. Common Core 3.MD.C.6 (also 3.MD.C.5).

About this activity

Sprout the gardener has irregular flower beds — L-shapes, staircases, and crosses — and children carpet each one completely with moss-patch unit squares, leaving no gaps and no overlaps, then count the squares to find the area. It's a free, interactive Grade 3 math activity that runs right in the browser with no account.

Because the beds are not plain rectangles, there is no length to multiply by a width — the child measures area the real way, by covering the space with unit squares and counting them. The rounds vary the thinking: cover an empty bed, fix a covering that has a gap and an overlap, predict an area before tiling, finish a partly-covered bed, and build a bed of an exact size such as 5 or 6 squares.

It is aligned to Common Core 3.MD.C.6 (with 3.MD.C.5) — measuring area by counting unit squares with no gaps or overlaps. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.

What's inside this activity

  • Designed for Grade 3 learners (ages about 8–9)
  • Common Core strand: Measurement & Data
  • Aligned to Common Core standard 3.MD.C.6

How to play

Tap inside the flower bed to lay moss-patch unit squares until the whole space is covered.

Cover it with no gaps and no overlaps, count the squares, and check — or fix, finish, or build to the size asked.

Not quite? Add or remove squares and try again — there is no timer and no score.

What your child practices

  • Cover a shape completely with unit squares, leaving no gaps or overlaps
  • Count the squares to find the area
  • Find the area of irregular L-shapes and staircases without multiplying
  • Fix gaps and overlaps, and build a region of an exact area

Learning goals

Measure area by covering a shape with unit squares and counting them — the focus of Common Core 3.MD.C.6

Understand area as the number of unit squares with no gaps or overlaps

Find the area of irregular shapes that cannot be measured by length times width
