Set the Clock — Tell Time to the Hour & Half-Hour (Grade 1)

About this activity

A written time is given — like 3:00, 7:30, 9:00, 6:30, or half past one — and the child drags the long and short hands on the analog face to show it while a digital readout updates as they go. Set the Clock is a free Grade 1 math activity that plays right in the browser on tablets, phones, and classroom computers, with nothing to install and no sign-up.

Setting a clock is harder than reading one, because the child has to produce both hands rather than recognize a picture. For half-past times the short hand sits between two numbers, not on one, so a child who only nudges the hour to a number will be off — they have to place it halfway. Watching the digital readout change as the hands move ties the analog picture to the numbers children already know, and the times stay at hours and half-hours so the focus is on getting the hands right.
