Draw the Clock Hands: O'Clock Times

Every time on this Grade 1 page is a whole hour — 3:00, 7:00, 11:00 — and every clock face is empty. The child reads the digital chip under a face, then draws two hands: the long minute hand straight up to the twelve, and the short hour hand pointing squarely at the number the chip names. Four faces, four whole hours, no minutes to work out anywhere. It is the first rung of the drawing-the-hands ladder, and deliberately the plainest one on it.

Starting at o'clock isolates one idea: the two hands are not the same. Children who have only ever read clocks often draw both hands the same length, or push the hour hand right out to the rim because it looks tidier there. On this page the difference between them is the answer — a long hand to twelve and a distinctly shorter one to the hour — so it gets rehearsed a dozen times before minutes complicate anything. Ask which hand goes in first every single time; that habit is what sticks.
