Draw the Clock Hands: Half Past

Every chip on this Grade 1 page reads half past — 2:30, 6:30, 9:30 — and every clock face is waiting to be filled in. The child draws the long minute hand straight down to the six, then places the short hour hand not on a number at all, but exactly between the hour just gone and the hour coming next. Four faces, all of them at :30, so the single new idea gets repeated rather than met once and lost.

This page exists because of one very stubborn mistake. Asked for half past four, most children plant the hour hand firmly on the 4, where it has always gone before, and produce a clock that reads roughly four o'clock. The hour hand moves continuously; by half past it has crawled halfway toward the next number. Drawing four of these in a row, with someone asking where the hour hand has got to each time, is what converts that idea from something heard into something the child has actually done.
