Draw the Clock Hands to Five Minutes

Times on this Grade 1 page step in fives — 1:20, 4:35, 8:55 — and every clock face starts blank. To place the minute hand the child counts round the dial in fives, five for the one, ten for the two, fifteen for the three, until the count reaches the number the chip asks for. Then the short hour hand goes in, somewhere between two numerals rather than on one. Four faces, four five-minute times, and a lot of counting round the rim.

This is the page where the clock face stops being a ring of hour numbers and becomes two scales at once. The 5 on the dial means five o'clock to one hand and twenty-five minutes to the other, and nobody reads a real clock until that double duty feels ordinary. Counting the dial aloud in fives while drawing is the whole method, and it doubles as skip-counting practice that pays off in multiplication later. Expect the counting to be slow at first and noticeably quicker by the fourth face.
