Draw the Clock Hands: Quarter Past and Quarter To

The four times on this Grade 1 page land on the quarters — :15 and :45, quarter past and quarter to. The child reads each digital chip and draws the minute hand out to the three or to the nine, then judges where the short hour hand has crept to: a quarter of the way past the hour, or three quarters of the way toward the next one. The faces are entirely empty, so both hands are the child's decision.

Quarter hours are where clock language starts pulling against the numbers on the chip. Quarter to eight is written 7:45, and the hour hand ends up nearly at the eight — so a child who has learned to match the spoken hour to the drawn hour hand finally meets a case where the words and the picture agree with each other but not with the digits. Drawing it settles that confusion far better than explaining it does. Say each time aloud in both forms while the pencil is still moving.
