About this activity

An o'clock time appears on the clock — like 3 o'clock, 9 o'clock, or 6 o'clock — and the child reads it and taps the matching digital time from three choices. Sprocket the rooster crows the hours in this free, interactive Grade 1 time activity that's a child's first step in telling time, all in the browser with nothing to install and no sign-up.

The idea it builds is that at an o'clock time the long minute hand points straight up at the 12, and the short hour hand points to the hour, so 3 o'clock is written 3:00. The wrong choices are other whole hours, so the child has to read which hour the short hand points to rather than guess. Connecting the clock face to its digital form — 3 o'clock equals 3:00 — is the gentle beginning of reading time.
