Number Tracing 0 to 4: Big Digits, First Strokes

This number tracing worksheet takes the five easiest digits — 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 — and prints them big, so a brand-new writer has room to work. Each numeral appears as a row of large dashed models. The child sets the pencil on the orange dot, follows the little arrows, and traces the digit again and again across the row. That is the whole task: five friendly numbers, traced slowly and often, with the start dot and the arrows doing the coaching.

The very first thing to teach about writing numbers is not the shape — it is where the pencil begins. A child who starts the 2 at the top curve and the 4 at the top of its first stroke will write those digits cleanly for life; a child who improvises a starting point each time builds a habit that is hard to undo later. This page exists to plant that habit while the digits are still simple. The 1 is a single line, the 0 a single curve, the 4 two straight strokes — nothing here fights the hand, so all of the child's attention can go to the orange dot and the direction of travel.

The page prints free as a PDF, and one digit per sitting is plenty at this stage. When 0 to 4 feel comfortable, the number tracing 5 to 9 sheet brings on the curvier second half of the digits, and later the trace-and-write numbers page lets the child prove each numeral without any dashes at all.
