Number Tracing 5 to 9: The Tricky Half

This number tracing worksheet covers the second half of the digits — 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 — in the same big format young hands need. Every numeral comes as a row of large dashed copies; the child places the pencil on the orange starting dot and traces along the arrows until the row is done. These are the digits with the awkward turns: the 5 changes direction twice, the 8 crosses itself, and the 9 starts with a circle where children expect a line.

The digits on this page are exactly the ones that most often come out backwards. A 5 flipped left-to-right, a 7 facing the wrong way, a 9 that turns into a lowercase g — these reversals are completely normal at this age, and the cure is not correction after the fact but correct movement from the start. That is what the arrows are for. When the hand practices the true stroke path dozens of times — start at the dot, travel the way the arrow points — the reversed version simply never gets rehearsed, and the correct form becomes the automatic one. Ten slow, accurate traces do more here than fifty rushed ones.
