Number Words Worksheet

Match Numbers to Number Words with a Line

Grade 1 Number & Operations in Base Ten Common Core

This Grade 1 page drops the multiple-choice format entirely. Five numerals stand in a column down the left, five written number words in a column down the right, and the child draws a line from each number to its word. The words are deliberately scrambled — no word sits opposite its own number — and the values run from the teens up toward one hundred, so the teen words and the tens words end up competing for the same lines.

Matching behaves differently from circling, and it is worth having both on hand. On a multiple-choice page every item is decided on its own; here the five pairs form one puzzle, so a wrong line makes a second one impossible, and children quickly discover the strategy of doing the certain ones first and reasoning out whatever is left. That process of elimination is genuine mathematical thinking rather than word recognition alone. It also means a single mistake becomes visible immediately — to the child as much as to the teacher — which makes the page unusually self-correcting.

Print the PDF free and encourage a light pencil line, because matching pages reward the child who is willing to change their mind. Number words to 20 and tens in words are the two pages that feed it, and write the number words is the harder step where nothing is offered to choose from.
