Number Words to 50: Reading Two-Part Numbers

The six numerals on this Grade 1 page run from 13 up to 50, each printed with three written number words for the child to choose between. What changes at this range is the shape of the words themselves: above twenty they arrive in two parts joined by a hyphen — twenty-six, thirty-one, forty-eight — so the child is now reading a small structure rather than recalling a single memorized word.

Two-part number words are where reading and place value meet. Twenty-six is not an arbitrary label; it says twenty and six, in that order, and a child who reads it that way is reading the number's structure straight off the page. The decoys on this sheet make that necessary, because one of them is often the same digits reversed — thirty-two lurking beside twenty-three — and options that share a first part or a second part cannot be told apart by glancing at the beginning. It is also the natural moment to mention the hyphen, which English uses on every compound number word from twenty-one to ninety-nine.
