Number Words Worksheet

Tens in Words: Ten, Twenty, Thirty up to One Hundred

Grade 1 Number & Operations in Base Ten Common Core

This Grade 1 page keeps strictly to the round tens. Six numerals — 10, 20, 30 and their neighbors on up to 100 — are each printed with three written number words beside them, and the child circles the word that matches. Every numeral on the sheet is a multiple of ten, so the words in play are ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety and one hundred, and the wrong choices are drawn from the same family.

This is the page where the classic English confusion gets confronted head-on. For every ten from thirty to ninety, one of the two decoy words is its teen twin: forty against fourteen, sixty against sixteen, ninety against nineteen. The two families sound alike, look alike on the page, and mean wildly different amounts, and children who blur them make place-value errors that look like carelessness but are really vocabulary. Isolating the tens is what makes the difference audible — say the options out loud and the stressed ending gives the answer away. The odd spellings deserve a mention too, since forty loses the u that four keeps, and no rule explains it.

Print the PDF free and read the choices aloud as you go; the ear catches those endings faster than the eye ever will. Number words to 20 covers the teen half of the same confusion, and match numbers to number words puts both families side by side on one page.
