Inchie's Garden Path — Measuring by Laying Units
Help Inchie the inchworm measure the garden! Lay identical helper-worms end to end along each object — no gaps, no overlaps, all the same size — then tap each helper to count how many long it is. A warm Grade 1 measurement game about laying length units and discovering that length is the number of units, aligned to Common Core 1.MD.A.2.

About this activity
Inchie the inchworm measures garden objects by laying helper-worms end to end: along a pencil, a leaf, a ribbon, a crayon, or a carrot, the child places identical units with no gaps and no overlaps, then taps each helper to count how many long the object is. It's a free, interactive Grade 1 measurement activity that runs in the browser, with no account.
The big idea is that length is the number of same-size units that fit, the focus of 1.MD.A.2. The rounds make the rules visible by breaking them: one has a sneaky gap to scootch closed, one has helpers overlapping that need room, one offers a wrong-size decoy unit to reject, one starts off the tip, and one even measures the same leaf with big units and then little units to show that smaller units give a bigger count. The child does the laying and counting, so the measuring principles are discovered, not just told.
It is aligned to Common Core 1.MD.A.2 — measuring a length as the number of same-size length units laid end to end with no gaps or overlaps. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
What's inside this activity
- Designed for Grade 1 learners (ages about 6–7)
- Common Core strand: Measurement & Data
- Aligned to Common Core standard 1.MD.A.2
How to play
Lay the helper units end to end along the object — close any gaps and remove any overlaps.
Tap each helper to count how many long the object is, then press Check.
Not quite? Try again as many times as you like — there is no timer and no score.
What your child practices
- Laying same-size units end to end with no gaps and no overlaps
- Starting the first unit right at the object's edge
- Counting the units to give the length of an object
- Seeing that smaller units make a larger count for the same object
Learning goals
Measure length by laying same-size units end to end — the focus of Common Core 1.MD.A.2
Understand that gaps, overlaps, and mixed units give a wrong measurement
Build the unit-iteration idea behind reading rulers later
