Equal Groups — Repeated Addition to Find the Total (Grade 2)

About this activity

Children make equal groups — the same number of objects in each — and add them up to find the total, in this free Grade 2 math activity that plays in any browser with no download and no account. The rounds run from 2 groups of 3 up to 3 groups of 5, including 4 groups of 4 and 5 groups of 2, so the child works with many different equal-group arrangements.

Unlike a tidy rectangular array, here the objects sit in separate groups, which makes the 'same number in each' idea the whole point. As the child fills each group, a repeated-addition strip grows alongside — 4 + 4 + 4 — turning the equal groups into a sum, and then they type how many in all. The child builds and adds the groups; they do not multiply yet, but they meet the exact thinking multiplication is built on.

It is aligned to Common Core 2.OA.C.4 — using repeated addition of equal addends to find a total. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
