Marlo's Magnifier — Show Me the Proof (Grade 1)

Grade 1·RL.1.3

Marlo the raccoon is a story detective, and every case is a clue hunt: read a short story, then a clue card says something about a character — "Mira is brave." Tap the detail from the story that PROVES it, not just any true thing that happened. A warm Grade 1 reading game about describing characters with key details and finding the evidence, aligned to Common Core RL.1.3.

About this activity

Playing story detective with Marlo the raccoon, children read a short three-sentence story, then a clue card states something about a character — "Mira is brave" or "Theo is careful" — and they tap the one detail that proves it, across cases covering brave, kind, curious, careful, patient, honest, generous, and hardworking. It's a free, interactive Grade 1 reading activity that runs right in the browser, with nothing to install and no account.

The whole point is finding evidence, not just any true sentence. When the card says Nina is generous, the proof is "She gave two stickers to her friend" — not the true-but-unrelated facts that the stickers were shaped like stars or that Nina kept one for herself. Each round offers one supporting detail and two real details from the same story that simply do not show the trait, so a child has to read closely and ask, "Which line actually proves this?"

It is aligned to Common Core RL.1.3 — describing characters in a story using key details and backing up what you say with evidence. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.

What's inside this activity

  • Designed for Grade 1 learners (ages about 6–7)
  • Common Core strand: Reading: Literature
  • Aligned to Common Core standard RL.1.3

How to play

Read Marlo's three-sentence story, then read the clue card that names a trait, such as "Sam is kind."

Tap the detail from the story that proves it — the action that shows the trait, not just a true detail like the color of someone's boots.

Not quite? Try again as many times as you like — there is no timer and no score.

What your child practices

  • Connect a character trait word like brave, patient, or honest to the action that shows it
  • Pick the detail that proves a statement instead of any true thing that happened
  • Read a short story closely and reread to find supporting evidence
  • Notice that what a character does tells you what they are like

Learning goals

Describe a character using key details from the story — the focus of Common Core RL.1.3

Support a claim about a character with evidence rather than a guess

Build the close-reading habit of going back to the text for proof
