Defining Attributes of Shapes — Is It Still a Triangle? (Grade 1 Geometry)

Grade 1·1.G.A.1

A free interactive Grade 1 geometry activity: a triangle is still a triangle even when its colour, size, or direction changes. Drag each shape into the right box — sort by what it IS (its number of sides), not how it looks. Common Core 1.G.A.1.

About this activity

Is it still a triangle if it's red, big, or tilted? One shape is named each round, and the child drags every shape into the right box by deciding what it IS, not how it looks — sorting real triangles from squares, pentagons, and hexagons. It's a free, interactive Grade 1 geometry activity that runs in the browser with nothing to install.

The whole idea is the difference between a defining attribute and a non-defining one. A triangle is defined by having three sides — full stop — while being red, big, or tilted is just how this particular triangle happens to look. By sorting examples against tempting non-examples, the child learns to ignore the surface and judge by the property that actually matters. That is the start of real geometric reasoning.

It is aligned to Common Core 1.G.A.1 — distinguishing defining attributes from non-defining attributes and building and drawing shapes that have them. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.

What's inside this activity

  • Designed for Grade 1 learners (ages about 6–7)
  • Common Core strand: Geometry
  • Aligned to Common Core standard 1.G.A.1

How to play

Read the named shape — for example, triangle — at the top of the round.

Drag each shape into the right box by deciding whether it IS that shape, no matter its color, size, or direction.

Not quite? Try again as many times as you like — there is no timer and no score.

What your child practices

  • Decide whether a shape belongs to a named group by its number of sides
  • Tell a defining attribute (number of sides) from a non-defining one (color, size, direction)
  • Recognize triangles and quadrilaterals in many forms, not just the textbook example
  • Ignore look-alikes and judge a shape by what makes it that shape

Learning goals

Distinguish defining from non-defining attributes of shapes — the focus of Common Core 1.G.A.1.

Understand that a triangle stays a triangle when its color, size, or orientation changes.

Build the attribute-based reasoning that classifying and naming shapes depends on.
